90.5 WERG has been rocking GU since 1972. The radio station has had a few name changes and logo facelifts but from when they broadcast from the Zurn basement to their new home in the Center for Communication and the Arts, WERG has been an exciting opportunity for students through the decades. This year, the group celebrated World College Radio Day with a week of fun events coinciding with Ƶ’s Unity Week.
These events ranged from countdowns, live on-location broadcasts, and local, Ƶ focused coverage for the week. The week ended with the rebroadcast of a special program from Homecoming in 2021 where original WERG alums of the 1970s took over the station to share old radio stories. The festivities were exciting and led to big news for the station this month. The WERG jockeys were awarded a Spirit of College Radio Award from the College Radio Foundation.
The Spirit of College Radio Awards are given in recognition of truly outstanding and spirited efforts made by college radio stations on World College Radio Day. Out of the hundreds of stations that participate, only ten are recognized for this award.
